BYU-Idaho is Speaking Out About Speaking Up.

We All Deserve To Be Heard But How Can We Make People Want To Listen

REXBURG, Idaho – Why is public speaking America’s number one fear? Who says speaking in front of others has to be scary? Brigham Young University-Idaho students are learning in their Professional Presentations class on how to speak in a way that engages and motivates so that people will want to hear what they have to say. We all have struggles, passions, and lessons we have learned so come together to speak of them and empower one another.

It is natural for us to feel fear of not being accepted and to fear that we will not say the right things around others. How do we change that and improve? Well we practice and we talk about it. These students want to show you everything they have learned in these areas by applying their abilities in a special event. We all know what TED talks are but have you ever been to one? The energy and ideas that fill the room are invigorating and these students are going to try to recreate that in their very own TED talks at The Best of Ted Event.

Kelley Monson, a junior here at BYU-Idaho says,” I always knew how powerful words are but I never realized how much of an impact you can have when you speak from your heart and have the chance to touch so many people.” Just as Kelley said, that is exactly what students are striving to do at The Best of Ted, to help us pick ourselves up and dig deeper in understanding of ourselves and of how how we can help spread ideas that will better the world.

The key to connections is communication and we all want to be heard but how will we ensure that people will listen to us and care. We all have times where we struggle to express a thought or feeling and we all know what it is like to feel like our voice is lost in the crowd. Come out to Best of Ted on March 31st at 7 p.m. in the Manwaring Center on campus and be inspired by those who are brave enough to share their thoughts, ideas, and stories. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself and the only thing holding you back is yourself so stand up and speak out about what needs to be heard and support those who are doing so.
